After the Academy: How Professional Development Carries Back to Classrooms

When a JROTC STEM Academy wraps up, cadets take home memories, skills, and new goals. But they’re not the only ones who leave changed.

For Academy Teachers and JROTC Cadre, the learning doesn’t end when the last project is built or the final model airplane lands. The professional development they received before and during the Academy continues to ripple forward – shaping the way they teach, lead, and think long after summer ends.

More Than a Summer Gig

Because STEMWORKS’ Academy PD is hands-on, collaborative, and grounded in real-world applications, it gives teachers and Cadre more than just camp prep. It gives them tools they can use in their classrooms year-round.

Whether it’s engineering practices, problem-based learning strategies, or new technology platforms, participants leave with practical, tested ideas they’re excited to bring back to school.

“I’ve already planned to adapt one of the Academy challenges for my ninth-grade science class,” said an Academy Teacher. “It’s rare to leave PD with something that’s classroom-ready – but this was.”

The PD model also places strong emphasis on leadership and collaboration, core values that align perfectly with JROTC’s mission. Cadre members often discover new ways to lead STEM-focused initiatives at their schools, or mentor other teachers in how to blend technical and leadership training.

“I used to keep STEM and leadership as two separate tracks for my cadets,” one Cadre member explained. “But now I see how well they go together. That shift is going to change the way I run my program next year.”

Lasting Local Impact

Because Academy Teachers are drawn from the local school district, the benefits of their training remain in the community. What they learn over the summer doesn’t just impact one group of cadets, it strengthens STEM instruction across the district.

“We all do lots of professional development in our business, and this was the best and the most relevant PD that I’ve been to. The curriculum is amazing. It gives me perspective as a STEM teacher for what I need to take back to my students.”

Some go on to lead PLCs, support robotics or engineering clubs, or even help develop curriculum aligned with what they used in the Academy.

Cadre members often report similar outcomes, from creating after-school STEM opportunities for cadets to collaborating with core subject teachers on interdisciplinary lessons.

PD That Sticks

The best professional development doesn’t end when the sessions are over. It creates momentum, confidence, and lasting change.

That’s exactly what the JROTC STEM Academy model offers – not just a summer event, but a powerful launch point for year-round growth.

And when teachers and Cadre return to their schools with fresh ideas, stronger skills, and a renewed sense of purpose, the real work begins. Because long after the Academy ends, the mission continues.
