Before the Boots Hit the Ground: Why In-Person Training Powers Every STEM Academy

Before a single JROTC cadet takes on a design challenge or pilots a model airplane at a JROTC STEM Academy, a different kind of mission is already underway – one that sets the tone for the entire experience. It’s not about equipment or curriculum. It’s about people getting prepared through in-person professional development.

This training brings together three critical groups:

  • JROTC Cadre from local schools
  • Academy Teachers from the surrounding district
  • Academy Coaches from STEMWORKS

Each group contributes unique strengths, and their shared training time is what transforms a plan into a high-impact, student-ready experience.

The Power of In-Person

Unlike most current PD models that rely heavily on virtual modules or brief webinars, the Academy model prioritizes immersive, in-person preparation. Teachers and Cadre don’t just hear about what’s coming, they do it. They build the structures, solve the problems, and test the tools they’ll later use with students.

Led by experienced Academy Coaches, who have already completed the curriculum themselves, these sessions ensure everyone is on the same page, confident in the material, and ready to deliver it with fidelity and enthusiasm.

“It’s not just about learning the content,” shared one Academy Teacher. “It’s about learning how to work together. The in-person time gives us a chance to build trust and figure out our rhythm before students arrive.”

Alignment Across the Nation

Each JROTC STEM Academy site has its own setting, student population, and logistical quirks. But the instructional experience remains consistent, thanks to this front-loaded, face-to-face training.

Academy Coaches guide teams through the curriculum, unpack pacing, align learning targets, and model key strategies. This ensures every student, at every site, receives the same level of quality and engagement.

And the collaboration goes both ways. Local teachers and Cadre bring their own expertise and regional knowledge, making every camp feel connected to its community.

“The PD helped us personalize the program while staying true to its core,” said a JROTC Cadre member. “That’s what makes it work from year to year.”

Building for Sustainability

What happens during the two days of high-impact PD doesn’t just launch a single camp, it creates a foundation for future years. As more educators cycle through the experience, each new group builds on the last, preserving quality while growing the network.

According to post-Academy survey results from 2024, 90% of instructional team members felt that the professional development successfully prepared them for STEM instruction, and 89% said it helped them understand the curriculum. It’s clear evidence that the PD lays the groundwork for effective teaching and long-term program success. When instructors return to facilitate in future summers, they’re not starting from scratch, they’re deepening their expertise. And when new teachers or Cadre join the team, they’re stepping into a model that already works.

The in-person training isn’t just about one summer camp. It’s about building a team, a culture, and a consistent system that can last.
